He then moved from New York City to Los Angeles, where he went on to land various guest star roles on such popular television shows as Miami Vice, Fame, as well as in music videos by such artists as Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. Michael has appeared in such films as Rob Reiner's A Few Good Men alongside Tom Cruise, and Alive with Ethan Hawke, where he endured months of near-starvation and freezing temperatures atop a remote mountain in British Columbia. In a performance with five different roles, Michael won a Drama-Logue Award for Best Actor in a play at the Mark Taper Forum entitled A Standup Tragedy. Based upon that stellar performance, he was tapped by the producers of the ABC sitcom Head of the Class to star alongside Howard Hesseman during the last two seasons of the series.

Michael's breakout role came with Dick Wolf's urban drama New York Undercover, where he played the role of Eddie Torres, the brooding cop with a heart. Michael went on to win numerous awards for his multi-layered portrayal. After a four-year run on the Fox series, Michael went on to star in the Showtime drama Resurrection Blvd. Michael played the embittered boxing champion, Carlos Santiago, a role for which he also went on to win numerous groundbreaking awards. During his stint at Showtime, Michael developed yet another extension of his talents by venturing into the realm of directing. The two episodes he helmed were among the highest rated of the entire series.
